1h am the night after dancing contra, We were coming back last night from Bozeman contra dance party, montana, passing by Big sky ski resort, west Yellowstone, Harriman state park,... Snowed a little, 1-2 cm of snow on the road. Not too slippery, no ice, just fresh powder snow, no other traces of car/truck tyres/tires. Nobody around, quiet calm night. Was at the bottom of a 6% grade slope which we were going down at about 40 mph or 60 km/h and about to climb another hill. I started accelerating. Suddenly, i see what looked like 10-12 grey bundles of rolling trees All over the road. It was not wind blown small trees. It was a horde of deers hanging out on the road aligned like a wall. 50m or 150 feet from them, i hit the brakes. Sarah is still sleeping tight. ABS triggers. I desperately hit the honk. Arriving close to the animals at still 15 km/h or 10 mph and sliding straight. Both the deers i was going to hit finally decide to shift sideways at the last second. We are stopped a few meters past where the deers were standing. Deers looking at us incredible. Sarah wakes up "what is happening?"...
It was the closest encounter i ever had. So glad the honda has new all season tyres and good brakes. We almost had a bit of deer meat to cook...
Crazy wildlife, they just freeze in front of headlights....
